In 1998, I moved from Kenora, Ontario to Edmonton Alta. to start my university career. This very last-minute decision was based on the “facts” that the U of A had a climbing wall, a sky diving club, and was close to Jasper. I soon realized that sky diving is way too expensive for a student, the climbing wall gets old quick, and Jasper is 4 hours away and sucks. That Christmas, on a family ski trip to the Kootneys, I learned that I could attend the University of Lethbridge and ski Fernie on a regular basis. As a competitive judoka, I also learned that Lethbridge hosts Alberta’s best dojo, oh yah … and the U of L has one of the best education faculties in Canada. As my ‘99/00 season began, both skiing and judo were off to a great start, that was until one Friday in January, when a friend invited me to Castle Mountain.

My hour and a half drive to The Castle was filled with stories of this legendary Mountain. As ‘Double G.’ (Gary Granger) led me down Castle’s steeps, I realized my high expectations were in fact way too low! If you have the need for speed, this place is sick. On our ride home, we made it to Pincher Creek, and realized that we were heading the wrong direction. With a weekend committed to judo, we stopped and plugged a pay phone to inform a disappointed sesae that we would be skiing for the weekend …. and the next, and the next …..

Now that I am finished paying for education, I returned to Lethbridge to mold minds (kind of a scary thought), and to ski that always STEEP and once again DEEP
Castle Mountain this week. A week into an early season, it has been puking more than the ‘Poon’ at Last Class Bash: 295 cm to be precise, which has packed a 160 cm base. Castle’s renowned ski patrol opened the South Chutes Saturday allowing my long, fat sticks to obey gravity and rip these stretched, fat runs. This was an epic day, lapping the chutes, North glades, and everything in between.
Keep an eye on Castle’s accumulating snow report and make sure to get your carcass down here when she pukes - you won’t be disappointed.
