CALGARY, AB – Fortress Mountain was set to open December 12th with a
significant overhaul of the lift system. However, too much snow has slowed
the progress of the upgrades and the resort has had to delay opening until
December 19th (construction permitting). The unusual early season abundance
of snow has made it difficult for the machinery and equipment to take
position to complete the construction.
“These early season conditions are outstanding but unusual,” says Neil
Jackson, General Manager, of Kananaskis Resorts with the Resorts of the
Canadian Rockies; indicating that the conditions for this time of year are
not average based on the past five seasons. “It should make for some great
adventure skiing once construction is complete,” adds Jackson. Fortress
Season Passholders can ski or ride at Lake Louise until December 19th and at
Nakiska from December 12th until December 18th.
Fortress Mountain Ski Area is located in the Kananaskis Valley, on the edge
of the Alberta Rocky Mountains, only 1.5 hours from Calgary. This special
place provides some of the best adventure skiing in the Rockies set against
a spectacular backdrop. This season the resort has expanded by 248 acres,
increasing the mountain’s skiable terrain to 937 acres. With 35% more
terrain, skiers and riders will have access to some of the most beautiful
backcountry skiing.
In addition to Fortress Mountain, Resorts of the Canadian Rockies’ proud
family of resorts includes the Rockies Biggest, Canada’s Best, Lake Louise;
Calgary’s Closest Mountain, Nakiska; Legendary Powder at Fernie and Family
Friendly Kimberley. With the new Canadian Rockies Louise Card, guests can
experience great skiing/riding at all these Resorts at super savings. With
the Rockies’ only loyalty card, skiers and riders can enjoy their 1st, 3rd
and 7th day of skiing/riding FREE and receive discounts on ticket prices at
all RCR Resorts in Western Canada. Canadian Rockies Louise Cards are on
sale on until December 17th, and can be purchased for $56.00 plus GST at the
RCR Calgary Office and all RCR Resorts, as well as at all Calgary CO-OP
locations, AMA and Sport Chek.
Fortress Mountain operating days will be Wednesday through Sunday for the
2003-04 ski season.
