FERNIE, BRITISH COLUMBIA – The first-ever Fernie Freeskiing Competition was held in 2003 and was a huge success with 95 competitors from around the world. Known for its steep and deep terrain, Fernie is a perfect location for a freeskiing event and is getting set to hold its 2nd Annual Fernie Freeskiing Competition on March 18th – 21st, 2004.

The development of modern freeskiing started in the 1980s in North America,
where former alpine racers and freestylers transferred their dynamic skiing
style on to the off-piste terrain. There are many forms of freeskiing: big
mountain free riding, slopestyle and big air events. Contests began and the
first major competition was held in Valdez, Alaska in 1991. Freeskiers are
judged on the line they pick, technique, aggressiveness, control and
fluidity of their run. Skiers receive more points for more unique and
difficult routes. Participants in such a competition are daring with
excellent technical skills and strong knowledge of mountain terrain. To
watch these Freeskiers compete is a breathtaking event in itself.

“This premier event fits Fernie! It show cases the amazing terrain and
legendary powder,” says Matt Mosteller. “ We are also pleased that Fernie’s
own top ranked Free Skier Meg Oster will be competing in this years event,”
added Mosteller.

Fernie is delighted to have Captain Jack Carey of Telluride, Colorado back
as Event Director for the 2nd year. Jack has years of experience including
two years as Event Director for the Canadian Freeskiing Challenge at Red
Mountain, B.C. and Media Director of King of the Hill World Extreme
Snowboard Championship.

The competition in Fernie will take place March 18th to 21st, 2003 and is
open to skiers (alpine or tele-) over the age of 19. Registration and
competition information will be available from the Fernie Alpine Resort
Guest Services office in mid January.
