The Beasley Rescue Society and Nelson Search and Rescue have partnered up with Kokanee Helicopters and a consortium of sponsors to form The Kootenay Heli-Rescue Society. KHRS specializes in Helicopter Flight Rescue Systems, also Known as Long-Lining. Outside of Whistler, The Lower Mainland, and Parks Canada in Banff, KHRS provides the only other Long Line rescue option in Southern British Columbia. This service offers a quick and efficient rescue option in difficult and technical terrain.

Backcountry travel is an increasing attraction in the Kootenays as the area continues to grow in popularity. With the increase in backcountry activity there is also an increase in hazard. In Difficult rescue situations the Long Line system is proven to reduce the risk to both the rescuers and the subject(s). This is acomplished by reducing the amount of time that both parties are exposed to the elements.

In order for a Long Line rescue to be put into action, a Risk Benefit Analysis must be done by the team. Obviously the benefits must outway the risks in order for one to take place. If a subject is compromised in technical terrain and a Heli-Rescue is called for then the team will assemble and begin their operation. A member of the team is strapped in and dangles beneath the helicopter anywhere from 56 to 206 feet. The length of the line depends on the rescue situation. The chopper pilot gently lifts the the rescuer into the air and places him right at the subject. The rescuer temporarily detaches from the line while he secures the subject. When both parties are secure then the chopper pilot literally fly's the line back into the rescuers hand. The rescuer and subject re-attach to the line and are lifted to safety.

Nine Rescue experts that span from Nelson to Beasley to Kaslo have been professionally certified in Heli-Rescue Systems and make up the KHRS team. The team can provide a quick and efficient rescue service in an area spanning from Grand forks to Creston, and down to the U.S. border.

Joe Vingo of KHRS and Nelson Search and Rescue says that they have completed phase 1 of 3 of their goal in becoming fully equiped in Heli-Rescue Systems. Phase 1 cost in the neihbourhood of $37,000 and each of the next two phases which include new equipment and certifications for additional rescue options will cost around $50,000ea.
