Guy will be using the award money to attempt a new climbing line in the Indian Garwal region and we wish him the best of luck and safety.
" On July 16, 2001, our team hiked down the ridge from the Denver Glacier into Skagway, Alaska after having skied and bushwhacked more than 2000 km. of mountainous terrain from Vancouver, BC."
Who was on this great adventure of yours?
Over the whole trip there was 5 people involved: Vance Culbert,
John Millar, Lena Rowat, Dan Clarke, and myself. The whole trip
went from Pitt Lake to Skagway Alaska.
How old are you?
29
Why did you pick this line?
It had never been done before and it's a linear heavily glaciated
line that looked skiable.
How much bush whacking did you do?
Between 100 and 200 kms of bush whacking throughout the whole
trip: roughly 10%
What kind of style did you do the traverse in?
The entire traverse was self-propelled, meaning we never took
a shuttle or ride from anything but our own feet. We did 24 food
caches, which were often placed in logging and mining camps.
Where were the biggest peaks of the traverse?
The whole thing was full of big-ass mountains everywhere. The
Devil's Thumb in Petersburg Alaska was pretty big.
What was the hardest part of the trip?
The interpersonal relationships, and dealing with the cold;
when it's 0 degrees Celsius and raining it's very hard to get warm
and stay dry.
What was the best leg of the trip?
The best leg has got to be Pemberton to Bella Coola: that'd
take you a month and it's highly recommended.
Did you get into any avalanches?
We didn't have a lot of problems with avis. We were in 2 of
them, but it wasn't serious.
What was the coolest part of the trip?
The coolest part was spending 3 seasons in the mountains. You
really get to see how things change with the weather.
