Festival
WHISTLER, Canada, May 28, 2004 – Organizers of the TELUS World Ski &
Snowboard Festival have just announced the event dates for 2005. Referred
to as the world’s most intoxicating mix of hi-octane music, arts and sports,
the 10th anniversary of the Festival will take place in Whistler Resort from
April 8-17, 2005. The Festival producer, W1 Inc., is already strategizing
for 2005, striving to deliver the pre-eminent springtime lifestyle event in
the world.
the record-breaking sales for some local businesses, to the packed parking lots and the overflowing Village, the 2004 Festival estimated more than 250,000 visits as travellers flocked to Whistler to feast on 10-days of
energy and excitement.
“This year\'s Festival was a resounding success and the producers took the event to a new level with their ongoing development of creative sport and culture programming for all ages,” said Barrett Fisher, President of Tourism
Whistler. “We look forward to seeing the Festival continue to evolve next year and beyond as Whistler\'s signature spring event.”
From surprise appearances by mega star Justin Timberlake, to the greatest free concert line-up ever including such heavyweights as The Black Eyed
Peas, GOB and Bif Naked, this year’s Festival was declared the best ever. Timberlake’s appearances on April 23 are the most talked about surprise from this year’s Festival. The crowd was deafening when Timberlake joined The
Black Eyed Peas on the DKNY//JEANS Stage for “Where is the Love”.
Afterwards, the Peas and Timberlake delivered a mega-ton blast of hip-hop beats during an encore that had the massive crowd yelling for more.
Timberlake made a second unannounced appearance during the inaugural McDonald’s Rail Session later than night, presenting the awards to the winners. Both the athletes and the crowd were stunned to see Timberlake for
a second time that day. Winner of the women’s ski rail, Sarah Burke said,
“having Justin around blew people away.”
From April 20-22, sold out crowds attended the acclaimed Panasonic Pro Photographer Search & Showdown and the renowned Panasonic Filmmaker Showdown. Known as the pre-eminent lifestyle arts exposé, these events showcased a stunning array of creative photographs and short films by
leading action lifestyle artists. Derek Frankowski won the Pro Photographer Search with his spectacular mountain bike images, which told stories transcending the sport and documenting the beauty of nature and human form in action. The Pro Photographer Showdown ‘Best of Show’ was Bali-based photography legend, Jason Childs, who delivered a crackling tour de force presentation of stunning surf photos and images exploring the culture and customs of Indonesia’s indigenous people. Whistler’s dynamic duo of Lauren
Grahman and Jackie Cerminara won the Filmmaker Showdown for their film “Insert Meaning Here”, which took the audience on an introspective journey that asked the question, “What have you done to make the world a better place today?”
The legendary Ripzone Snowboard Invitational and World Skiing Invitational were the cornerstone sport events and the throbbing heart of the Festival’s action-packed adrenaline ride. After winning this year’s Salomon Superpipe event on April 24, freeskier extraordinaire Tanner Hall said, “I am pretty scared for next year because the level went up a whole lot from last year and next year is going to be even more ridiculous.” After the nighttime
Salomon Big Air competition on April 24, freeskiing godfather Mike Douglas
commented that, “once again, the World Skiing Invitational blew me away. Just when I thought that the sport’s progress had levelled off, we see an event like we had today.”
From mind-blowing action sport, to awesome concerts, and captivating arts events, the 2004 TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival has set the stage for even bigger things next year. More information on the 10th anniversary will
be released later this year.
