Listen carefully… this has only occurred once in my life but I won’t forget it. A shock almost… ok, ok, it may be a slight exaggeration for the average folk but a shock for an addicted ski tourer who values solace and respect from other fellow ski tourers. It’s called manners and most people have them but there are the odd delinquents who have no clue and no value of them
We could break trail parallel to the main track, weaving our way through the trees, and pass them. It would work since they were going torturously slow, so passing them while breaking trail wouldn’t be too difficult. So off I went, breaking trail beside them, matching the main switchbacks with my own, weaving around trees and crusty snow-bomb piles but he wouldn’t let us by. He would speed up right when I was beside him, at the point of passing him. I tried four times to pass him and every time he would speed up and let out a little snicker beside me once I failed to pass him. Finally, after almost coughing out my lungs and shaking uncontrollably from being so frustrated and angry, we were forced to ass-sniff their butts for the rest of the way up until we reached the bottom of the moraines where we quickly went a different direction.
He wasn’t even breaking trail. He was following the highway paved by someone else. I can’t fathom why someone would disrespect someone else’s serenity and solace in the mountains. I hope that it had nothing to do with the fact that he was being passed by two women. I like to think that society has already stepped over that speed bump when it comes to woman and athletics- it is just not an issue anymore. It is one thing not to give away a secret ski touring spot, but it’s another to create road rage in such a peaceful environment. There are manners that must be upheld in the backcountry and just because Rogers Pass is consistently getting busier and busier every year, this does not mean that we can disrespect and butcher other people’s right to enjoy the backcountry.

Aleta I just wanted to mention that you and Sheena looked absolutely fabuloso in that pic with the hot pink leg warmers. Nice article, the one about alaska kicked ass too.

I did a course with Aleta last year and got to spend some time with her in the backcountry and was really surprised to hear that she actually got pissed off! I know that if I came across the self-concious mistake for a person that deserves to be blessed with these mountains, he will get a few words from me and my friends that might or might not be there. Some good ol' Revy justice is always nice as well, but can't be promised. There was many times that Aleta could pass someone else on the course myself included, and there is nothing wrong with that, if anything it should drive a person to be better/faster. There is no dout in my mind that she passed him on the way down. Natural selection will take care of people like that.

I wrote this article right after it happened; just to get it out of my system, to vent on paper, plus I found it pretty funny. Usually my philosophy is to ‘kill them with kindness’ but it didn’t work with this guy. He was just a naturally gifted jackass. Plus if Sheena and I were going to jump him and give his head a good snow-swirl, we would have had to take on the four other people behind him too. I guess my shotgun would have come in handy though, I could have shot his skis to shreds, and then he would have been both scared and screwed. Experiences like this just add to the endless little twists that every backcountry excursion has. One of these days, buddy’s going to push around the wrong person and pay for it with his face but hopefully it won't happen in the mountains.

Aleta wrote the article right after the event and it was only just publised, I can say with confidence that it hasn't been stewed for this long

brutal manners...or should i say lack of manners? he should put the competitiveness away and step aside. it ain't no competition. I know what it's like to want to pound in a couple of runs before the afternoon drive, and it's a bitch when some lame-o kills your buzz. way to keep your cool.

I'm sure that this situation was incredible frustrating at the time. After the fact, however, its pretty damn funny. What is going to be even funnier is if this clown keeps this kind of behavoir up. I don't make it up to the pass that often, but oh... what I what I would give to be powering up a skin track with Bellis and come across this guy. A little bit of [b:3f930e9482]Old-School-Revelstoke-Justice [/b:3f930e9482]unleashed... Good Times

i am sorry but i can't beleive you have been stewing on this for almost a year. when someone gets in your way and they won't get out of the way you roll over them, no questions no remorse, are you not aware of this unwritten law???? i agree that his behaviour was uncalled for, but letting it bother you for this long, i hope you have considered what your response will be for guys like this in the future. newf

That sucks. I can't understand that behavoir. Even if they had broken trail and you caught up to them so what . Now they can follow you and take it easy and make better time. Pulling to the side is simple maners. All you have to say hello and blah, blah.. and thanks for breaking trail. I sometimes find the same behavior on the bike trails on my commute. So people don't like to get passed and really step it up. I step it up when I get passed but only go at a faster pace not to pass them. But on the other hand I've had people come up and draft on me of 3-4 k then pass me and invite me to draft on them. Sure. I'd had people on my tail and I just pushed till there was no more left in me. Now there's lots of room to pass but you really have to step it up to get out of draft mode and pass. Knowing he was drafting just made me push it. After 10k hit downtown he passed me and said " great pace".

I love it when chicks school jack asses like that, just the fact that two females caught him probly blew his fragile self image. A buddy's girlfriend who skis with us most days (when she's not coaching Jr racers.) Can out ski half the guys I know....Not me though....honest. Anyway I'd be pissed at the fact that thhe guy got me pissed off in my "Happy Place" more than anything. I like to think I'm pretty fit, and a good skier, but any chick that can catch me I will smile and let em pass then work like a dog to keep up so I can check out her ass longer. I love fit Women.

It never ceases to amaze me how competitive people are. It isn't a big deal that someone else is going faster than you on a particular day. The most laughable part about this is that you already made up a ton of time on this group but they somehow felt better by being able to keep in front of you for the last part of the trip. I don't know why someone would want another party breathing down their neck anyway.
