Molson Canadian Freeskiing Championship to Rip Through Red Resort
$10,000 at stake for winners of 4th annual event matching world's top
thrill-seeking skiers
The four-day event, televised in February on the popular
Canadian Sportsnet program "Pontiac World of Skiing," carries a cash
purse of $10,000 for competitors best able to tame the steep, gladed
terrain of nearby Mount Roberts, one of Red Resort's five total mountain
peaks.
"Red is thrilled to partner with Molson Canadian again to
host this highly energetic event matching the best of the best among
international freeskiers," said Jim Greene, vice president of resort
operations at Red, formerly named Red Mountain Resort.
"When great snow, incredible talent and nightly parties converge at one
ski resort in January, you get an event no one should miss. The
Freeskiing Championship has unique atmosphere someone has to experience
to fully appreciate," he added.
Captain Jack Carey, organizer of the Championship,
commented, "This is big-mountain skiing, so it will be arduous for new
competitors as well as seasoned veterans of the freeskiers' circuit. It
promises to continue the wonderful tradition of this mountain as a new
era dawns on Red Resort."
To that end, Red recently began an aggressive resort
redevelopment effort that will build 1,400 on-mountain dwelling units,
create 70,000 square feet of commercial space and upgrade a host of
resort amenities and visitor offerings over the next 15 years.
The Molson Canadian Freeskiing Championship is the first stop on the
International Freeskiers Association (IFSA) North American Tour. Winners
will be awarded points that contribute to their overall tour standings
throughout the 2005 competitive season.
The format of the event will follow IFSA Big Mountain Freeskiing
competitive guidelines, which dictates that participants ski the
mountain creatively, unrestricted by gates or formal course layouts,
while they take aggressive lines and make big drops between Roberts'
varied mountain terrain. Judges of the Molson Championship will evaluate
skiers on five categories - line choice, control, fluidity, technique
and aggression.
According to Greene, Red Resort is perfectly poised for this month's
competition. "Conditions are fabulous, and should only get better as the
event draws near." With several December snowstorms enabling the resort
to open in full earlier this month, Red currently has among the deepest
alpine bases in the West.
Registration for the Molson Canadian Freeskiing Championship is
$250
CDN, and participants must be 19 years old to enter the competition. On
Jan. 13, contestants will begin qualification on the mountain's Lynks
Line for 50 sought-after semifinal slots. Finalists will compete on the
following two days before winners are announced on Jan. 15. The event is
hosted by Molson Canadian.
