Whistler Blackcomb is about to host one of the largest snowboard events and
for the first time in North America. Jan 13 - 23 Blackcomb Mountain is host
to the FIS Snowboard World Championships presented by Nokia. A massive
effort by the snowmakers and their new snow guns created huge piles of a
made snow using 22 million gallons of water. The snow has been moved around
to create all the event sites including a massive Snow Cross track, big air
jump, rail jam & the new night half pipe is in the final stages of shaping.
The Events crew have been busy hand shaping banked turns & installing safety
fences. Benny from the Park team is working with David Ny for the pipe prep.
Steve Petrie continues his grooming magic for the half pipe and opening
ceremony rail jam set up. Jeff Ihaski has been the principal groomer who
designed and built the Snow Cross track. Many other staff and event
employees are working behind the scenes on VIP areas, TV set up, sound gear
and event banners. The World Championships kicks off on the evening of Sat,
Jan 14 with a parade, opening ceremonies and a rail jam. Event access is via
the base 2 area on Blackcomb with good viewing from the Excalibur gondola or
right over the course areas on the Wizard chair. Good luck to all the
international competitors attending and go Team Canada!
