The first day qualifiers were held on West Baldy, and although there was no fresh snow, the sun was shining and people were charging. Fast turns on chalky snow in the upper section gave way to technical billy-goating in the middle section of the venue. Some dope lines went down and the stoke was high.

The ladies braved the hard pack and started shredding Baldy at 9:00 am. Huge props should be given out to the women for getting up there early and laying down some sick lines. One by one the ladies shredded the pitch and got the crowd more and more fired up.

For the duders, AK boy turned Snowbird local Cody Barnhill stepped up and threw down a crowd pleaser. In testament to our roots, Cody started everything off with a big spread eagle off the top and then progressed into two slick three’s later on. Not to be outdone, Whistler shredder and Biglines Freeride scholarship winner James Heim killed it top to bottom, skiing fluidly through marginal conditions. His late in the day effort locked down first place and showed that a strong Whistler contingent is down here to represent Canuckistan.

An amped up crowd full of pre-qualified athletes soaked up the sun and the sick skiing while cheering everyone on. One great day is in the books, and with bluebird skies forecast, tomorrow promises to be even sicker.
