Most people in the snow-riding community haven't heard much of the WMH Productions; but this "little production company that could" is starting to create some buzz. Started in 2002, WMH and its founder Brad Hays filmed their freshman release, 2003's "
ORION: The Blank Generation". Although modest in production and distribution, "ORION" showcased some of Central Canada's best riding, and a truly unique editing style and feel. WMH was back for more in 2004 with "
OK ALRIGHT." This time around, there was a movie theatre premier tour, complete with wild parties, and not to mention a great video.
Today, WMH is nearing the final stage of production for their 2005 release, "
SNOW." Curious about WMH's newest endeavor, I got a chance to ask Brad Hays about his upcoming work, and its
TEASER.
Well first off, let's hear some history... Of yourself, your riding, WMH and its crew.
Name: Brad Hays
Age: 29
Riding For: 17 years
Riding Accomplishments: More pow turns in the last 5 years than Ive had in my 17 years of
riding. Discovered Rogers Pass 3 years ago, won the Cdn National Slopestyle Championships
in 1997. Made a tonne of great friends
WMH Crew: Cam Hornaday, Marc Walton, Mike Stastook, Ryan Hall and many others. They're
all great people and are really pushing every aspect of the video from pre-production to
sales.
WMH's roots: Where, when and what are they??
WMH stems from the lack of media exposure outside of Whistler. We are based in Alberta,
but are contstantly trying to expand all over Canada.
What does WMH stand for... as an acronym? as a concept? as a statement?
Willy Mays Hays. Hoffy gave me the name after watching Major League II, but we stand
more for the future of snowboarding than we do baseball.
What makes WMH different from other production companies?
We've challenged ourselves to overcome the odds. Locations, Sponsors, Money,
Recognition, Enviroment and everything else thrown our way.
THE TEASER
How important is a teaser to the success of a snowboard video??
It depends on the company. If they're big like Mack Dawg or Standard, they can afford to
promote in other ways. For us the teasers essential for the videos promotion.
Q: What were your intentions while creating the SNOW teaser??
To grab peoples attention, promote the video, and create some hype.
How is the final production of SNOW going to follow the vibe set out by the teaser?
SN+W is a documentary which captures the riders progress, success and emotion
throughout the course of the year, much like the teaser.
THE VIDEO
Is there anything different viewers can expect from "SNOW" in contrast to previous WMH releases?
We've increased the quality in all aspects of production including lighting, design,
videography, editing, distribution and not to forget the riders are killing it on everything.
What type of feel are you aiming for SNOW to have... in regards to editing? soundtrack? riders? riding?
More emotion than is seen in other, more typical snowboard videos. Audio plays a huge
roll in achieving this.
What riders have you been working with extensively for snow??
WMH have numerous videographers and everyones been getting shots and working hard.
When is most of your filming done?
Consistently throughout the entire production. Fall, Winter, Spring and even Summer. Its alot of work making it happen and more about the time than the money because it is a documentary.
What makes a good snowboard video to you?
Talent, Image, Music, Creativity, Locations, Variation, Length, Price, Progression and sometimes Snow.
Are you planning any extensive special features for "SNOW"?
Yes, but we can't say.
