Geoff Small of Queenstown today emerged as the first Free Ski Open NZ Volkl Big Mountain Champion. Poor weather over the last four days led the planned heli-access finals on Mt Albert to be cancelled and Small’s title was based on his qualifying run on day one of the competition at Treble Cone. Fellow New Zealander, Tom Dunbar from Hanmer Springs took second while Marcus Waring from Canada tied with Alistair Eason (NZE) for third place.

In the women’s competition New Zealand’s Janina Kuzuma took first place ahead of Jo Guest from Scotland and Kate McDougall, also from New Zealand.

FSANZ president, Hamish Acland, said it was disappointing not to be able to hold the final but it had done nothing to dampen the competitors’ enthusiasm for the rest of the Free Ski Open NZ.

It was incredibly frustrating not to be able to give the competitors the opportunity to ski Mount Albert,” he said. “We tried to run the alternative big mountain finals in Treble Cone’s Motatapu Chutes today but again, the weather was against us and visibility was too low. Now the Open will focus on the pipe and park and tomorrow’s K2 Superpipe competition which promises to be spectacular with a very high calibre of international athletes taking part, as well as New Zealand’s best.”

Tomorrow’s K2 Superpipe at Snow Park will a strong international field that includes X Games slopestyle champion Charles Gagnier (CAN) and Loic Colomb-Patton (FRA), who placed second in the World Superpipe Championships as well as New Zealand’s current national champion, Jossi Wells.
