As expected, this year’s FRESHtival blew every other ski function (including its old self) out of the water. Steve and the gang at Fresh moved the show down town to the Uptown Theatre which was a definite improvement from the lecture halls of SAIT. And with Red Bull’s help they turned a cool little rail jam into a spectacle worthy of the best skiers in the world.

Stash This

All three nights of movies sold out as seemingly every skier in Calgary came out to get body parts autographed and see this years gaggle of ski flicks. There were movies for all tastes from urban rails and back country booters to story telling big mountain segments and the crowd was amped on everything they saw.

As the stoke peaked Saturday night people couldn’t wait to watch the pros live and Red Bull made sure they weren’t disappointed. After 3 days of shovelling snow and building scaffolding, THE WALL was finally ready to be sessioned. Skiers dropped in from above the roof of The Roadhouse and carried speed at the 15 foot high wall ride trying to lock onto coping and avoid taking out the dj on the deck. With rock concert lighting and a crowd to match it was a ski scene Calgary hasn’t had since the SnowJam tours.

TJ Schiller, Simon Dumont, Riley Leboe, Chris Rubens, Philou Poirier, Dana Flair, and friends were split into 2 heats and the top half of each went onto the final. After barely getting out of his heat, TJ Schiller got hot and clearly won the finals. “I think he was just toying with us,” said runner up Riley Leboe about Schiller’s come from behind victory.

As the snow melted the crowd made its way into The Roadhouse for a night of drunken fun with their heroes. After watching this interaction all night, it became clear to me that drunken hand shakes with your favourite skier that last over 3 minutes or slurred praises that go on for longer that 2 beers go beyond flattering to a place best described as creepy. But, it appeared that star worship from the girls was perfectly acceptable.

After 9 ski movies in 3 days I’m so psyched to ski that I’m dreaming of the WeeWaxy 500 and I’m so numb to gnar that you could spin a 100 foot cliff and I wouldn’t even notice. After days of watching skiing, talking skiing and rubbing shoulders with the ski world’s elite it’s going to be a tough month of work while waiting for the season to start!
