Molson Canadian Freeskiing Championship Comes to Red
$10,000 at stake for winners of 5th annual thrill-seeking event
ROSSLAND, BC. (Jan. 9, 2006) — All eyes will be on Red Resort this month when 100 of the world’s top freeskiers come together in Rossland, B.C., for the 5th Annual Molson Canadian Freeskiing Championship, beginning with the junior event Jan. 8.
The week-long event, televised in February on the popular Canadian Sportsnet program, “Pontiac World of Skiing,” carries a cash prize of $10,000 for competitors best able to tame the steep, gladed terrain of Mount Roberts, one of Red Resort’s five mountain peaks.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Molson Canadian once again to host this highly anticipated event matching the best of the best among international freeskiers,” said Jim Greene, vice president of operations at Red.
“The combination of our deep snow pack and best-in-the-world talent and extreme energy make for an event no one should miss,” Greene continued.
Captain Jack Carey, organizer of the Championship, commented, “This is big-mountain skiing, so it will be a very challenging ride for new and seasoned competitors of the freeskiers’ circuit.”
The format of the event will follow IFSA Big Mountain Freeskiing competitive guidelines, which dictates that participants ski the mountain creatively, unrestricted by gates or formal course layouts, while they take aggressive lines and make big drops between Roberts’ varied terrain. Judges of the Molson Championship will evaluate skiers on five categories — line choice, control, fluidity, technique and aggression. Jeff Holden, head judge of the competition last year, returns to lead his team of judges for another year.
According to Greene, Red Resort is perfectly poised for this month’s competition. “Conditions are fabulous, and should only get better as the event draws closer.” With several December snowstorms enabling the resort to fully open earlier this month, Red currently has among the deepest alpine bases in Western Canada.. with a 168-cm snow pack (approximately 64 inches) at its base area.
Registration for the Molson Canadian Freeskiing Championship is $250 CDN, and participants must be 19 years old to enter the competition. On Jan. 12, contestants will begin qualification on the mountain’s Lynx Line for 50 sought-after semifinal slots. Finalists will compete on the following two days before winners are announced on Jan. 14. The event is hosted by Molson Canadian.
New this season is the first-ever Junior event for kids ages 12-17. Conducted solely on the Lynx Line, youths will participate in a one-day event on Jan. 8 with qualifying and final runs occurring on the same day. Teams from as far away as Snowbird, Utah, have signed up to test their skills against some of the newest ‘up and comers’ in the Kootenay region..
