Proof was provided today that it doesn’t take a foot of blower pow and unlimited visibility to ski like a rockstar.
As promised, the skiers at the Lake Louise Big Mountain Challenge turned ER-6 into their proving ground in order to decide who would make it through to the next round. The visibility was just good enough for the judges to keep an eye on the action from the base of the venue. Unfortunately, the athletes picking their way down ER-6, an enigmatic face with sporadic peppers, struggled to stay on top of their boards.
The ladies of the BMC are a story unto themselves. If top-qualifiers Karolina Ekman and Tessa Parry were skiing against the boys, they’d still be competing again tomorrow. All the girls involved showed that burly lines don’t require a dangling set of testacles.
Almost anyone can make a sunny pow line look good. But if you can make bony hardpack look impressive in flat light, you obviously know how to shred. Personally, I can’t imagine being asked to perform in conditions like today’s. But anyone that made it through to the second round is there because they have the ability to make something out of nothing. With the prospect of visibility tomorrow, the spectating will be as fun as the skiing.
Author's Note: I have to apologize for the lack of photos from the last couple days. Our intended photographer, Dave Mossop, has been too busy taking a turn on the other side of the lens and shredding the shit out of the comp. Way to go Uncy Dave.
The Start order will run from last to first today.
