We've been tracking Matty over the past 5 years, watching as he steadily honed his big mountain skills leading up to his current success. This years IFSA world tour watched as Matt posted a first place finish in Kirkwood and top 10's in Verbier and Snowbird. The results gave him a world tour second place finish. Biglines talked to Matt about his life outside and inside of skiing.
Well Matty, its been a while so lets start off simple. Whats your favourite toque (AKA Beanie)?
This one on my head right now.
Favourite Fish?
Sockeye or smoked mussels in a can.
Favourite local Surf spot?
Jordan River in the fall, Vancouver Island.
Favourite Bike Trails?
Khybers to Babylon, Cheap Thrills.
Tunes?
Marley and some good ol classic chill out tunes.
It seems like there are a lot of different 'off season' activities in the ski world. What have you been up to this summer?
Well there are a lot of things to do in the mountains. I do a lot of biking mostly, crosscountry and freeride, lots of big missions and and big climbs. We do a lot of swimming in the summer and I go to Vancouver island or the States every couple of weeks to do some surfing. Its good training for the elements and toughens you up. I also like hiking, whiffle golf..... every day is a workout no matter what you do.
You were just out on the east coast for a few weeks. How was it going back home?
The east coast was great! I went to New Brunswick, a place called Shediac for 3 weeks with my family and friends. I did a lot of sailing with my brother and father it was awesome!
You raced some Sailboats this summer. How does that compare with competition skiing?
Its crazy too man! Racing sailboats is freakin intense. Basically every Monday and Wednesday there are local races which are fun and still competitive, but we also did a class race where there are boats coming in from Halifax and all over. There are world class sailors and thats where it gets really serious - you know 12 hours out on the ocean, 4 races per day. Its timed, so all the boats figure out their course and when the one minute buzzer goes the boats are neck to neck, tacking all over the place. There are a lot of close calls and you gotta be on the ball and make sure your sailing legs are top notch.
What else happens in Point-du-chene, New Brunswick?
Lots of beachin it; Parlee beach is awesome! Kilometres of nice sandy beaches with wicked skim boarding and beautiful people. There is a lot of great lobster and seafood on the East Coast. We drove to Lawrencetown on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia and did some surfing for a few days. It was great - really good summertime waves, comparing to Vancouver island it was a real treat - it felt like the waves had more velocity and power - good rides to be had, but maybe I was lucky?
This year you made it into the top 3 on the IFSA World Freeskiing tour. What made the difference? How did you prepare yourself yourself to get those top finishes?
Last year was really good because I got to ride my bike every day. The season started strong and early, we got to start skiing right away and the snow was awesome. The base was bigger so we could ski harder and prepare before the start of the comps. I've also been gettting a lot more support over the past few years which makes itlot easier to go for it, The real key is to stay healthy all year round and focus on what you want.
What kind of lines do you try to pick?
I try to pick lines that make the most sense to my eye and the judges eye. I like to ski the lines that are a bit more common that quite a few people will ski, but I try to change it up a little bit with my own style of skiing - fast and lots of airs.
What goes through your mind in the start gate?
That I'm crazy and why am I doing this. No, its really not that crazy. I've learned to pick lines that I really know I can do. I feel a lot more confident and that makes a big difference. I think its good that when you commit to a line you ski it clean and not just try to do it, especially in competition. If you fall once, you're pretty much cut. But when it comes down to it, you're there to give'er.
What are some of the most memorable moments of last year?
Well, every competition this year was great! Skiing february in snowbird the snow was phenomenal and the weather was awesome. Then I went to Switzerland in Verbier and we got to ski there 2 weeks and it was blower, coldsmoke pow pow! Winning the Kirkwood comp was pretty good too, kind of unbelievable at the time. There were so many good days - too many to remember. But the deepest days of the year were on my home mountain of Whistler Blackcomb
As Winter starts to approach, what is in your plans?
For now I'll keep biking everyday to stay sane till the snow flies. Once winter gets here I'll start skiing everyday to get ready for the world tour again and focus a bit more on still photography and filming with the connections I've made over the past few years.
What are you going to be skiing on this year?
I'll be on the 189 and 194 Rossignol Squads to rip the mountain apart. Its the best ski for Big Mountain charging and competition, and really just purely skiing too, and thats what I do everyday.
Tell us about sealions?
930 at night and me and my buddy mikey 'dogger' drove into long beach to have a last sunset surf, an hour and a half later it was getting very dark and we started seeing one or two MASSIVe sea lions coming at us from a distance, which is pretty common in the area. So we decided to stick around and get a last wave - all of a sudden! theres like 7 huuuge sealions - with huge white teeth and big mustaches like a wolf pack aroud us. They would jump out of the water inches from our boards, we got knocked over a few times! I just started paddling for my life and didnt stop till shore where I watched Mikey cry.
I'd like to thank Rossignol,Carrera Eyewear, Dincus Apparel, Snowcovers, and Biglines.com
