Not often does ski porn make it into the prestigious Banff Mountain Film Festival. That would be like Girls Gone Wild screening at Sundance. But the new movie Hustle & Snow by Adventure Film Works isn’t your typical ski flick. And on Nov. 3, in front of an audience of more than 300 people, it premiered at Banff as the sole feature length ski film for the 2006 festival.
“I was completely honored to be included at Banff,” said Hustle & Snow filmmaker Duane Kubischta. “It's the most renowned mountain film festival in the world.” The latest of three films by Adventure Film Works, Hustle & Snow tells the real-world stories of six freeskiers shooting for pro.
Kubischta, along with several of the film’s athletes, traveled to Alberta last weekend for the screening, and they returned home to Tahoe pumped to film more movies—ones that not only show awesome skiing but also tell a story. “It was great to interact with and be inspired by other filmmakers—I have so many ideas for this season,” Kubischta said.
Other films shown Nov. 3 as part of the Snow Show include Yes to the No about No-Boarding by Banff local Dave Massop; The Otterbody Experience featuring Doug Coombs; Dropstitch, an all-girls snowboarding movie; and a three-minute stop-action film by Logan Carlstrom about a Lego skier. Carlstrom had the distinction of being the youngest filmmaker ever selected for Banff.
While in Alberta, the Adventure Film Works crew took advantage of the areas other draws, including Lake Louise and the Banff tram. “The scenery in this area is amazing,” said Hustle & Snow athlete Miles Clark. “Your eyes just keep darting around to all the gnarled rock peaks.” With plans already in the making for a 2007 film, the crew plans on returning to Banff next year—hopefully for another festival, but definitely to ski.
