Seattle (Ski Press)-Michael Lund’s long run officially came to an end Friday as the former skiing star pleaded guilty to trying to smuggle 37 tons of marijuana into the United States in the late ‘70s.
Lund, an original star of the freestyle ski era, media darling, and co-developer of a freestyle skier’s association, entered the plea as part of a deal in which federal prosecutors will drop other related charges against him.
In 1978 Lund conspired with nine other people to bring about $75 million worth of marijuana into the U.S. aboard the Helena Star, a Colombian freighter. Lund was supposed to bring the marijuana ashore aboard his 61-foot racing sloop, the Joli.
