Todd Weselake has been riding and shooting in Fernie for years. Here is a little look inside the mind of a Toddler.

Stash This

Todd, tell us a little about yourself.
Hmmmm, my name is Todd Weselake

Nice work Toddler. You don't mind if I call you Toddler, do you?
Nope, not at all.

Great, so Toddler tell us how long have you been playing with cameras. How did you get into photography?

About 8 years ago, when I was in high school, there was a “photography program” available. Basically they gave us a crap load of free BW Film and dark room and let us go. Then I just decided to start taking my camera snowboarding. Now I don’t go anywhere without it.

Really, not even the bathroom?

Nope, not even the bathroom.

Intriguing. Why do you lug around heavy camera gear and wait to set up shots while everyone else is shredding the pow?

Well basically I am such a fast hiker/snowboarder, I use it to slow me down a little. I also use it as an excuse to bag the first turns.

Smart, very smart. Other than skiing and slowboarding, what else do you shoot?

Soft-core porn mostly, with some scenery and mountain biking thrown in and the odd portrait. (I think you spelled snowboarding wrong in the question.)

Actually I think you spelled slowboarding wrong in the answer. Anyway, you had a two page spread published in Skier Magazine this year. What did your mom think of that?

This was my first published shot, and like most mothers would be she was very proud of me.

Do chicks dig the photography thing?

Do They!?!

Have you had any photography related injuries? Black eyes....broken fingers.......?

None that I can remember clearly.

I know what you mean. So do you have any big trips lined up?

South America again next summer. Hopefully all around the world.

What are your goals over the next few seasons and how will you strive to accomplish those goals?

To travel the world and get more days shooting and snowboarding than anything else. I will do this by working my ass off when I’m not shooting, and working even harder when I am.

Let's be honest here, there aren't many photographers rolling in the dough. How do you support yourself?

During the summer I am a Reforestation Technician meaning I plant way too many trees to count, then a little more. During the winter months it’s a solid mix of Freelance Photography, Contract Photography, EI and maybe even a little of the THC industry.

You sound like the typical Fernie resident. Toddler must have some deep dark secrets. Tell us something about yourself nobody else knows.

Oh do I ever, and wouldn’t you like to know.

Yes, we would.

Unfortunately they are between me and the Swedish Girls Swim team, I hope you understand.

Finish this sentence: "This one time I was shooting and......"

......the athlete, whom I won't name, skied into the pow field above the drop I'm shooting. Next thing I know it sounds like a train coming at me, and the sluff slams me in the chest. I manage to keep me and my camera mostly out of the snow, and continue to get the shot, only he drops the wrong cliff. I don’t know where I’m gong with this so I’ll stop now.

Thanks Toddler. What photographers have inspired you?

Several have inspired me, most of them from Fernie:
Henry Georgi
Steve Short
Mark Gallup
Mike Berard
Grant Gunderson

Any Shout Outs?

Certainly. To the Fernie Crew, and rippers/photographers all around the world.

Good interview. I feel a little closer to The Toddler now. [size=10:a6bbed6887](but I'm not so sure I'm comfortable with that)[/size:a6bbed6887].
