Big Mtn in Whitefish, Montana rounded out 06' by hosting the first of their Knight Rider Freestyle Series. The Dubs Brothers with their usually posse, made the trip South to make sure Canada was properly represented. The event went down under the light supplied by the moon and the stars. The lighting on the course was a little sketchy to say the least. I dont really know how the Competitors could see the course- who knows? All the matters is that the boys and girls found a way to get it done and had fun doing it.

The pro skiier and snowboarder categories were the big draws. The action was heavy, and it was a tight one to judge.
Big-fish Joel Whalen and his school of minnows, put on a display of ridiculous, steezy color combos and equally steezy manouvers, however they were denied any places in the top three, were it was a 1-2-3 finish for the local boys from Whitefish. There was simply no denying who was top dooper in the mens snowboard event though. The results where not in question. Canadian Todd Williamson was in a league of his own, and won hands down. Pete Collins was stellar all night and was the only guy to challenge Williamson. The real battle was for 3rd, fought between Thommy Westcott and Adam Luarin, both Canadians recently released from the Fernie pysch-ward. It could have been either, but in the end it was Thommy that came home with the bananas.

It was a great night in Montana! The whole trip was great until the drive home from Whitefish when just before our convoy arrived at the border, our lead scout car, Joel Whalen's SmartCar was attacked by a fawn. The fawn, however, had underestimated the power the matchbox sized beast, and unfortunately paid the price of messing with Man. Within a few surreal moments a local in a pick up truck hauling cattle pulled up found a chrome hand gun under his seat. He stepped from the truck and in acold, mechanical way, approached the deer, brushed aside a baffled bystander and calmly shot the deer in the side of the head.

It was over before it happened and we were back in Canada sorry to have taken the life of the fawn, but happy to have Joel and Ally and their trusty SmartCar in one piece. Sometimes this stuff happens. The only good you can take from this kind of experience is realizing how lucky you are to be alive and skiing everyday.
