"In mogul contests, you're worried about having one of your hands always
dropping back when it's not supposed to. In freeskiing comps, you just
ski."
That was Brett Crabtree's response after doing his first IFSA
contest in 2002. After some decent past results on the North American
Tour, Crabtree is ready to take on the world.
After a summer of mountain biking and painting houses, Brett decided to
up his game by going to a retreat that tests his personal abilities and
boundaries. Now stronger than ever,Brett is getting set to shred the globe
and walk all over podiums.
Age:6_4_10_8-2 you do the math

pictures. Everyones got one right?
Hometown:Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Now reside Whistler BC
Shredding Krew:
Well there's many, ski manny days with Blazer and
roommate Topshee and it changes day to day, even run to run especially on
a pow day. There's the Blackcombe posse, you get up there and you will
find someone to shred with. That's what's great about this town everyone
rips! Go with the flow
Current Occupation: peasant- boot fitter - ski bum
Favorite Painter: Bob Ross R.I.P. He could paint a mean landscape, and
rock a mean fro!
Current TK Count: Well I could tell you but it changes and it wouldn't
be an accurate count. A gentleman never tells.
What's a TK? That's top secret information! Its a good thing but I will
let you know if you ask me in person. Or they could ask you, I'm sure you
have a high count as well!
Tell us about what you did for work two summers ago and the craziness that went down.
I went down and worked as a deck hand on a 160 foot sail boat, off
the coast of Key West Florida. It was the most beautiful boat I have ever
seen! It was a great experience, I got to do lots of fishin, boatin and
exploring around the keys with a crew of 7 and the owner. The summer is hurricane season, So with the adventure came hurricanes, Irene, Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Believe me Wilma was a bitch.
We were anchored in a channel 10ks from Key West through all the
storms.(I wouldn't recommend it) At first I was a little excited to be in
my first hurricane! It was rough and the rain came down sideways, really
really fast! Willma was the craziest night of my life! At around one in the morning I was jolted out of my bunk with everything crashing around, tv, drawers and the anchors chattering. The boat was holding and I ran up to the wheel house, everyone was wide awake. Things went straight down from there! The anchors snapped and away we
went, we rocked around like a cork in a river. Shortly after that the first crash
onto the flats was insane! I have never been so rocked, when we slammed onto the ground, the 2 mast fell(160 ft masts) crashing onto the wheel house, breaking the glass. It was mayhem! Everything was getting tossed around. Couldn't walk on the boat you just hold on and get rocked, water coming in people puking, computers, glass crashing around. I cant explain it, the noise was unbelievable. Winds were upwards of 175mph waves smashing over
the boat! Can't put it in words! Everyone was sick and my heart was beating so fast, I have never been that scared! We smashed around until nine in the morning digging a trench through the flats. I Hope to never be in that situation ever again.
You went to a top secret camp this summer to get you ready for the IFSA World Tour. Your first comp of the year (Red Resort) you came third. Are you willing to let people in on the secret?
Well it's not all that top secret, but it sounds good. My mom signed me up for this course that took place up the Squamish valley. It was quite the camp. They
teach you many things, from how your brain works by processing thoughts, they
push all your buttons, physically and mentally. Some of the activities
were easy for me and others were very tough. Everyone is different right,
what's easy for me was hard for others and vise versa. It was very enlightening, and what I got out of it I can put it into my day to day life. You can't be
afraid of failure or embarrased by what people think, who gives a shit what people say or
think. That's there issue not yours. If you let others push you around
because of something they say you aren't going no where's. Move on and
keep on. If you want some thing get it done. It was a great course I'm glad I did it,
and glad its over. I Could tell you more but would have to kill you.
You told me you can get anything you want as long as you "Put it out
there." How do you know? How does it work?
Have you ever heard of the law of attraction? Look around you, friends, things that have happened good/bad ect. If you are a negative person things probably won't tend to work out. Positive people are great to be around, they send a good vibe, and things tend to work out. There's a lot to all this and I would recommend looking into this stuff. Part of getting what you want is knowing what you want! We create our tomorrow's by what we
dream today. If you don't put it out to the universe you will never get
it! The only thing that stops you is yourself. Its your game!
I've heard you, on many occasion, speak of the Danza. What is that?
Now That's getting a little ouda hand here!
Does Danzig do it to?
I would hope so. I think you should do it more often!
Who would you rather ski with, Glen Plake or Glen Danzig?
Well they are both great I would say both. But I don't think that would go over to well. It would be like Tom and Jerry up there. I could see Danzig trying to scalp Plakes hawk and kick his ass but Plake would school him on the hill, it would be quite the scene. Besides Danzig doesn't ski, its too cold up here on earth.
What is the best music to shred to?
It has to rock, you know like a band! Tend to put the ipod on
shuffle, anything from The Band to Lamb of God. Variety is the spice of
life!
How does a background of mogul contests help with freeskiing comps?
For one, they're both comps. Same sort of atmosphere, you are focused, a bit
nervous. Having gone through that helps. Some people get
very nervous before their runs, cant eat or sleep. It kills them. So I
don't get too tense up there before my runs. Skiing the bumps is lot of
work, you got to be on it and aggressive which is same with freeskiing. It
definitely helped me out. Its been a long while since I was into
that stuff but it made me a stronger and more confident skier. Freeski
comps are better for me because you do whatever you want. In the bumps it
a set course its all the same. So you're free to paint your own line and
have fun with it!
A lot of athletes see freeskiing contests as a way to get"Discovered" by sponsors so they can get film and get photos in magazines. You seem less interested in that side of this and are more focused on doing comps. Do you have any interest in the whole media side of the ski scene?
Well, my main focus is comps and skiing the world and what ever
it takes to make it happen. That's what I want and I will do. I'm
definitely interested in the media side of thingsand working with sponsors. It would be a great way to make a living. Getting photos and filming is a lot of
work. But if it pays the bills is all good. Things tend to come, and I'm
grateful for that! It helps me do what I love. Its not cheap to do the
comps, there's travel, comp fees, accommodations, lift tickets, insurance,
gear, ect, So you need sponsors to make it happen. Whether i'm in the mags
or movies I will still be skiing so life is good. I'm just going to
continue doing what I was born to do. If the media side of things come in
to play, I'll get the job done.
Tell us about the time you met Steve Urkel.
Well it was me, Leatherwolf, Craigadeath, and well you, I believe.
We were out cougar hunting or lighting something on fire one night. When
who other than Steve Urkel walk outta Bills. It was quite something, Urkel
was throwing out hugs left and right. It was like we were his bro! He
doesn't look like a nerd anymore, he's all grown up now. You know we all
go through it at one time. It was another late night celebrity spotting.
Do you have any sponsors you'd like to thank? How about family and
friends.
Well I have manny people to thank,Family and friends without them I'm
nothing. Warren at LX Eyewear, Surefoot Whistler, Creas Mansbridge, Joey
Ewing, Steve Olsen, Adam Topshee, Cliff Pratt, Garry and Kathy Richard,
Tellie Joe, Crystal Lounge, Dave at Whistler Brewery,Ullr, and manny
others out there whether you know it or not!
Tell us anything else you care to mention to the global shred circle?
Follow you heart and get it done, aho! A good skier is a old skier! Ski
or Die!
Thanks B.-Tree
