Sun, smiles, snowballs, hucks, sickbirds, flips, Threes, slams, broken bones, beer, whisky, ganja, love and stoke. Just a few words that do very little justice when describing the first day of the World Tour portion of the Subaru US Free-skiing Nationals. To really understand an event such as this, one must experience the spectacle first hand. You have to witness these unique people pushing themselves to the very limit. You have to see a friend send a 60 ft cliff and come out on top of his skis, or see a fellow competitor attempting a 40 footer over rock, get snagged at take off get fully laid out sideways in the air and then crash into the body of rock, bouncing like a test dummy thrown from a 4 story building, ending with a motionless body and a silent crowd. You have to be in that very crowd, sharing in the emotional roller coaster ride of extreme stoke, and extreme concern. Its non stop stomach wrenching stuff. You have to feel the power, the love and the pain when 200 people raise their arms and from the deepest part of their souls let out a roar that would shame a lion, saluting a fallen comrade. You have to smell the B.O. in the meeting room at the beginning, and end of the day.

Snowbird Qualifier Highlights

Free-skiing as two key ingredients. Passion and Guts. Anyone lucky
enough to bare witness to todays event was served the very finest dish
the sport has to offer, and a sample of what happens when free-skiing
goes horribly wrong.

The bluebird once again showed up at Snowbird Resort, bathing the
gnar in a golden light, that gave a deceptive feeling of comfort.
There is nothing comforting about competing or watching this however.
When the first guy drops, sphyxters tighten and dont relax all day
long.

A group of hopeful ladies actually competed as the sun came up early
in the morning for a chance to ski later in the big event, after being
denied the opportunity to compete by mother nature the day before.
They got the short stick, but that's how it goes sometimes.

The men kicked the day off launching massive drops, and charging like
mad bulls down extremely exposed terrain that looked eager to eat them
alive. The level of skill was one I have not seen before. Bros were
stomping 60 foot airs without even a backslap on snow that probably
wasn't what you would call ideal for pulling such manouvers. 50 degree
chutes, with 200 ft cliffs on the side where basically straight lined
like blue runs.

The ladies, kept the adrenalin pumping and charged as
hard as the men, attacking a lot of the same features, with equally
ballsy speed and aggression. Of course there were the bails, which in
a flash ended the hopes of many competitors, and silenced the
otherwise loud and enthusiastic supporters.

Aaron Estrada was the before mentioned skier who got hooked coming off
a monster and pancaked on the rocks. After very tense moments,
Estrada was taken by ski patrol in a sled down the mountain for
medical help. Later in the day, Lizzy Sherry, a local ripper took a
huge ragdoll down a no fall zone. It was one of the scariest things I
have seen.

It was clear immediately that she had suffered some serious injuries,
but she gave a meak wave and removed her helmet, a positive sign for
everyone looking on. However, there were no patrol in the immediate
area, and she was too far up course to be reached immediately by anyone
from below. She was forced to lay there in what could only be agony,
while the crowd, silent, listened to her scream and plea for help. She
was eventually rescued by patrol, who themselves had to ski like
champion free-skiers just to reach the injured competitors. These
aren't normal people though and its a gaurantee that both Aaron and
Lizzy will recover from their injuries and ski the shit out of
everything.

It was a day to remember, and one that has left everyone with
something to look forward to in the morning when the finals kick off
at 9am.

soon to Biglines.com

Todays video as well as all Free-skiing competition videos that will be
shown on Biglines.com will be dedicated to our fallen brother Tobias
Lee, and our other fallen comrades, who we ski for everyday. The next
time you're about to drop in, let out a lions roar. Tobias will be
listening and shredding by your side.
