Now everybody has the RECCO tag on jackets, pants, boots, helmets, etc, but how does it actually work? Read on and watch the video to learn what RECCO is all about.
RECCO Video 18mgsFirst of all there is the RECCO tag that we are all familiar with. And apparently it is for rescue in an avalanche or when lost. That is true. But how do you locate the victim with a RECCO? I wondered the same thing until I met Dale in Vegas at the Ski Show.
When a rescue is initiated, organised rescue squads like Ski Patrol, Search and Rescue, will have a detector. The detector looks like a labtop opened up and has headphones plugged it. When switched on, it sends out a signal that is reflected by the RECCO tag on the victim and makes a noise. This makes it a directional tool, meaning, once you get a signal, you can walk straight to it; no flux lines like an avalanche tranciever. It also has a very long range.
It is not however, a substitute for an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe in the backcountry, or education, and RECCO are the first to acknowledge that. That is why they have produced the White Book. It is an educational tool they distributed in 3 languages; English, French and Japanese, that introduces skiers to the dangers, causes and importance of avalanche awareness.
RECCO are serious about avalanche prevention, but offer another tool to give you more of a chance in the unfortunate event of an avalanche.
