In the athlete's meeting in th morning, the judges stressed the importance of safety. The conditions were less than ideal with wind affected snow concealing deadky sharks just below the surface. Rocks and the undetonated bomb laying dormant in the snow at the starting gate. It made for cautious riding on a high consequence venue that was steep and exposed.

The boys lead out and rode strong, working the features as much as possible. A thinly covered double to the left was the high scoring line, but also the riskiest. In the final it was dealt with twice by smooth and aggressive riding and were clearly the runs of the day.

The girls followed and didn’t hold back committing to riding top to bottom come what may. A few ventured to the left and clocked some air time and on the upper portion of the course.

With plenty of time left in the day and the weather sublime, 10 men and 3 ladies were invited back for a super final. With glory up for grabs, the leaders rode conservatively and the chasers went out with guns blazing and resulted in the crash of the day on the double to the left above the “Toilet Bowl”. The rider was okay, but lucky to be capable to stand on his own 2 feet and complete his run.

In the final wash-up, Ralph Backstrom was crowned champion ahead of Tyrus Fisher and Dan Krenicki.

The women didn’t risk anything and didn’t gain anything with the order remaining the same and granting Shannon Yates the top spot on the podium, in front of Laura Dewey and Biglines Freeride Scholarship Finalist, Maria Kuzma.

Everybody was stoked on the event and it demonstrated the growing popularity of big mountain Snowboard competitions. Talking to many of the riders, grinning ear to ear after having a blast pushing themselves with other riders, their common sentiment was that it would be great to see more coming out to compete and have fun. The bigger the start list, the higher the standard and the more each individual pushes themselves and learns.

The snowboarders will be letting their hair down tonight and will continue to live it up for the next 2 days hanging out in the sun as the spotlight shifts to the Freeskiing World Tour which kicks off tomorrow and promises to entertain.
