Fernie Alpine Resort and RCR held the annual Fernie Big Air event on April 7. The event saw the big guns from out of town show up, but the locals were on scene to defend their turf. The warm spring sun softened the jumps and kept the sizable crowd drinking all day.
Fernie Big Mtn Comp 21mgsPassers by put themselves in peril as it rained snowballs all day. The
"Menage Trois" as the triple hit, triple threat booters used for the
comp are called, looked sinister. Poppy and long, with a serious
knuckle sandwich you seriously wanted to clear. Many had avoided the
XL take off all season, but today was the day to sack up, there was
cash on the line and way more girls to impress.
Both skiing and snowboarding fields were deep with talent. From the
groms to the girls to the old boys, there was plenty of game to go
around. With almost 5 g's in prize money on the line there was also
plenty of reason to huck meat all day.
The fans were treated to an awesome display of freestyles toughest maneuvers;
7's, 9's, corked tail 10's, switch everything and of course a good
ol' double backflip from a kiwi.
Local lad Connor Gilege not only impressed the gaggle of girls, but
also impressed the judges and took first in the junior men's snowboard
division. Fernie's finest women, the Helly Hansen contingency of
Janina Kuzma, 22 and Shannon "Little fish" Whalen, 19 went one and
two in the women's ski division. Kuzma is equally at home on the big
mountain stage, where she won the 2007 Canadian Freeskiing event at
Red Mountain. Whalen, who bursted onto the scene this season took
first in the Fernie Alpine Resort Rail Jam, and according to rumor has
been slaying everything on the mountain this season while filming for
Dubs Brothers Films production "Cold Lampin". Fellow cold lampers,
Sandy Ogilvie, Robbie Heule and Max Adams were up to their usually
trickery. Ogilvie won the men's ski, Heule and Adams went 2 and 3 in
the junior men's ski, out done by there skiing compadre David Cote
from Cochrane, AB. Ty Kuhn cold lamped the men's snowboard, but
managed only second, out steezed my Murray Hodgson from Pincher Creek,
AB. One of the sickest groms coming out of Fernie Paul Genovese
captured 2nd in the novice ski. Fernie's female snowboard posse was
represented by Maria Kuzma who took second and Kimmie Gourlie in third
spot in the women's division
