It just so happens that the winner of the Fall Winter 06/07 Global contest is Canadian. Nathalie Gervais is a 22 year old ski patroller at Castle Mountain.
On Tuesday April 10th Nathalie received a Jet Black 60th Anniversary 9-3 Sport Combi, 210hp, Automatic SAAB that she will drive to Ottawa with 2 friends. She will collect the Saab at Fresh Sports where we will be hosting a casual “send off” for her at 5pm.
After 3-4 days of driving she will then fly to Iqaluit on the 15th April with 2 male Canadian friends Cory & Steve.
On April 16th they will flew to Clyde River. Once she arrives in Baffin Island, Nathalie will be fairly isolated but will have a satellite phone to have contact with the outside world if need be. However, help will still be a day or two away. She plans to camp in the Fjord for 21 days, maybe on the frozen sea ice (this depends on what the guide recommends due to polar bears activities). From there she will either ski or kite-ski to the base of the couloirs and then bootpack/ climb up to the top of the couloirs and then ski down. She won't know until she gets there how technical the climbs/bootpacks will be, but she thinks it'll mostly be easy but long and tiring. They will return 16 May.
Nathalie is 22 years old, a pro-patrol avalanche technician. Her main objectives on this trip are to ski some amazing couloirs in the unreal setting of the Canadian Artic and to interact with the local population to learn about the Inuit culture and way of life.
She skis a lot, even to a slightly obsessive level and when she's not skiing she rock climbs, ice climbs, surfs and hikes, so is pretty active!
She's always been drawn to the far north and dreams of an Artic Ski Adventure. She wants to explore a new mountain range and enhance her mountain climbing skills. Skiing is her 'true love' and she hopes to do some of the best skiing in the world! She says that “skiing in this terrain would fulfill her wildest dreams”.
Her friends are keen photographers and writers who are ready to document the whole trip. Stay tuned for updates
