Contingents of the new era of female skiing and snowboarding gathered in Whistler during the festival for the Ullr is a Girl contest. The ullarisagirl.com contest proved to be an innovative female contest in searching for the most diverse female skier or snowboarder. This past week contestants had to showcase how talented they are during the WSSF Stompede Park and Pipe event, an evening of mountain culture talent and a big mountain competition.

The contest gathered leading figure heads in today female snow riding community. The line up of professional skiers included Sarah Burke, Lynsey Dyer, Jess Cumming, Meg Olenick, Grete Eliassen and voted in online were Pip Hunt and Meredith Eades. The roster for professional snowboarders included Leanne Pelosi, Bev Vuilleumier, Dominique Vallee, Mercedes Nicoll and voted in Vanessa Stark, Angie Seely and Joanna Dzierzawski.

The competitors showcased there diversity on and off snow, some contestants proved to be out of there comfort zone while others have graced each event with an ecliptic balance. The stand out talent in the park stampede event prevailed to be skiers Sarah Burke placing 3rd and Grete Eliassen seizing 2nd place and snowboarders Joanna Dzierzawski placing 3rd and Leanne Pelosi capturing 4th place.

The mountain culture evening was held at the Glacier shop where over 200 invited guests where entertained with talents from photography, jewelry design, movies, paintings, tile mosaics, dances and songs. Bev Vuilleumier threw down rhymes while Grete Eliassen proved she was a Chinese songbird and Dominquie Vallee wowed the crowd with her impressive dance moves.

The Big Mountain competition proved to be a new element for many of the girl’s competitors. Big mountain queen Lindsay Dyer dropped he biggest cliff and scored the highest score after 2 solid runs. Whistlers own Vanessa Stark was the leading lady on the snowboarding side showing her home advantage on Blackcomb’s Chainsaw Ridge.

An edgey vibe was evident on Saturday night for the crowning of the Ullr is a girl, but all anxiety was broken when Grete Eliassen was declared the winner. Grete was awarded the Ullr crown and $25 000 dollars in which she plans to donate to a variety of charities.

Ullr has been the inaugural event to mesh together skiing and snowboarding and big mountain and park riders. This event is foreshadowing the force that is starting to build within the female snow riding communities.
