It’s not a new idea; collect your sponsored athletes and recruit a film company to produce a ski movie featuring entirely your own riders. So when I heard that Peak Performance had released a 25 minute team movie, I didn’t think much of it. But then I actually watched the film.
Unlike most of the recent promotional movies produced by ski and clothing manufacturers, Stop Go Stop provides an inspiring and introspective look at much of what is good and pure about skiing. While the stunning cinematography chronicles the travels of dedicated skiers on a journey through the snow starved Alps, Scandinavia, Russia and Canada, the film reminds us that the timeless attraction of skiing is the ability to have fun in the snow.
Although the film focuses more on breathtaking scenery than action-packed skiing and big consequence lines, Jon Larson gives a stand-out performance and the profile of Swedish ski village Are is liable to make you homesick for a place you’ve never been. Canadians Kevin Hjertaas and Peter Velisek also do a solid job of waving the maple leaf amongst a mainly Swedish contingent of athletes.
The narrative is partly English and partly Swedish with English sub-titles but the filmmakers do an excellent job of conveying the message that skiing is a universal language spoken by those of like minds. And while there is nothing novel about that message, its one that no skier will grow tired of hearing.
Stop Go Stop is available for download at www.peakperformance.com, on a free DVD at Peak Performance General Stores in Whistler, Vancouver & Quebec, or at independent retailers across Canada.
