The Finals went down on Saturday on Mt Roberts at Red Mountain Resort. The teenagers dominated the mens with Dane Tudor taking the title and Crystal Wright winning a tight battle in the womens. Read on for results and video.
The weather was grey and foggy preventing the final being run on Knife's Edge, but that didn't stop the field of 11 girls and 17 guys sending it and skiing full tilt. The judges positioned themselves on the venue and had an up close and personal view of the action.
The girls dropped in first in a tight battle for all podium positions. Sonja Lercher put her case forward right off the top, but Snaggle Tooth lower down ended her plight. Leah met a similar fate skiing to win when the tooth hooked her up too. Crystal Rose Lee skied strong and solid to step into third while Karolina Ekman just edged Crystal Rose out. The stand out female competitor though was Crystal Wright, skiing fast, fluid and clean to make it look easy.
Originally a pool of 36 girls, the womens competition was the strongest it has ever been and Crystal Wright took home a $2500 cheque thanks to the big turnout by the girls and the growing stature of this comp bringing more sponsors dollars.
The mens was a scrimmage, with every competitor skiing to win and all of them capable. Dave Treadway threw down the the highest line score of the comp, dropping a straight line from the top and almost coming unstuck. Richard Small skied another solid line but despite Alex Blais missing a feature at the bottom, and Matthieu Gagnon Theriault crashing, it wasn't enough to podium.
When it was all said and done, Matthieu took third, while the teen gang of Luke Nelson and Dane Tudor claimed the top 2 spots. Luke, a dark horse in his first senior freeski comp was smack in the middle of the judges radar and put his name on the map.
The whole week though was the Dane Tudor Show. Leading from Day 1, he had a 10 point buffer going into the final, but rather than ski a safe, easy line, he stepped up to the plate and skied a rowdy line to leave no doubt about whose title this one was. At 18, skiing in soft jib boots, but railing Roberts like a GS course, he looked as though he couldn't do a thing wrong. The kid has so much confidence in his skiing, but has humility to compliment his skills and his future looks white hot.
The party was rowdier than the 3 days skiing put together and left some sore heads to ski the 20cms of fresh on Sunday.
Another awesome comp put on by Red Mountain Resort, with title sponsor Ledcor, and Australian Wool Innovation, SPL, Teckcominco and the athletes themselves.

It was Luke Nelson, a typo in the main story. Crazy to hear the guy skis like he bikes, kicked ass last year at the Pano Cup.

Same as yesterday, news story pops up on the jumbled home page saying click here for results and video, and after waiting 5 minutes for page to load - no video, just like yesterday. I log on to biglines less and less lately because of the unorganized mish mash of a home page, and the loading problems. It's like I'm on fucking dial up or something. Come on biglines, step it up a bit.

nate
