There is a little known area within the Mammoth Mountain ski resort that is always closed to recreational skiers and boarders…it is a cliff area known as “OH SH*T” and is adjacent to Rogers Ridge. The athletes in the qualifying contest for the Freeride World Tour, the Nissan Mammoth Quest, showed the spectators and media why this area is normally closed as they had to jump cliffs as large as 40 feet.
The top three finishers in each division of the Quest were awarded “tickets to ride” or invitations to the Inaugural contest of the Freeride World Tour, the Nissan Mammoth Challenge, to be held on McGee Mountain January 23, 2008. The best free ride skiers and snowboarders on the planet will assemble to compete on the McGee and the podium winners from today’s Quest will join them.
The men’s skiing was exceptional and the competition was very close between the international competitors.
At the end of the day the three podium winners to advance were all American.
Cody Townsend from Squaw Valley, CA had a one turn run that won over the crowd and judges as he straight-lined down the steep mountain. Griffin Post had an impressive line down Rogers Ridge that earned him second place. Mammoth local Cory Zila took final ticket to McGee by placing third with a fluid run and some nice airs.
The women’s skiing title for the Quest was awarded to Stina Jakobsson from Sweden. Her technical line and big jumps won over the judges and crowd. Elyse Saugstad from Squaw Valley skied a smooth, fast, and fluid run taking second place. Ane Enderud from Norway placed third as she demonstrated a smooth, controlled style.
Squaw Valley local Ralph Backstrom probably epitomizes what the Mammoth Quest is all about. Backstrom entered the open competition and won the Quest in the men’s snowboarding division. As he won the qualifying contest he will now compete in the Nissan Mammoth Challenge at McGee and potentially qualify for the entire Freeride World Tour. Backstrom rode consistently hard throughout the entire competition and wowed the judges in the final with a big 360 air.
Jonas Emery from Switzerland took time away from his freeriding to compete in the Quest and showed why he is one of the best riders in the world. Max Zipser from Austria rounded out the field placing third and taking the coveted final spot for the Challenge.
The women’s snowboarding division saw Berangere Moroc from France taking the top honors. Her big airs, smooth landings and fluid turns impressed the judges. Mammoth local Tiffany Noel was again solid and placed second. Kaisa Harkonen from Finland rode a smooth, fluid line to third place.
The Nissan Mammoth Challenge will be the first stop of the Free Ride World Tour at McGee Mountain on Wednesday, January 23, 2008.
