The Diamir World Backcountry Freeride Jam is building on two years of success that is all about participation and trying new experiences in the mountains. It is the only event of its kind in North America that introduces the backcountry experience to a large audience of skiers and snowboarders.
It is a very special event that celebrates the best of skiing and boarding, the spectacular backcountry of the Sea-to-Sky region and Whistler Resort. The backcountry is the origin of skiing and pristine untracked lines are the soul of skiing and boarding, and always have been.
The Diamir World Backcountry Freeride Jam takes place during the wild atmosphere and celebration of the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival. The DWBFJ is the arguably the only event at the TWSSF that allows, encourages and supports public participation. You don’t have to be an elite athlete to experience the incredible range of activities and it is all FREE!
The heart and soul of the Jam are the multitude of free product demos and skills clinics. To encourage more people to enjoy the backcountry and to try big mountain, off piste skiing and boarding we have to make it accessible
and non-intimidating. The top of Whistler Mountain is our Backcountry Headquarters, The North Face Backcountry Village. It is where all the action is and where you can try the latest backcountry equipment, tele gear, take instruction from guides, instructors and professionals to learn new skills and practice new techniques.
Free Alpine touring, telemark and backcountry boarding equipment demos showcasing equipment that won’t be seen by the public until Fall 08! An incredible opportunity for people to try next year’s gear and make their decisions early instead of waiting for the next fall snows. Avalanche clinics, the latest in safety equipment and how to use it, free guided alpine touring clinics, free Telemark lessons, product demos, even backcountry cooking demos. It is all here for skiers and boarders to enjoy.
Other events include:
Backcountry Photo Expose
Building on the success of the Backcountry Photo Expose gallery on top of Whistler Mountain we will expand the display and the contest for photographers. It is a fabulous way to give the average skier and snowboarder a window into this magical world. This will be on display from April 11 – 20 in the Whistler Roundhouse.
Canadian National Ski Mountaineering Championships
For 2008, we will continue our partnership with the UIAA (Union Internationale des Associations D’Alpinisme) as the Canadian National Championship race.
The Whistler Dash on Saturday, April 19th is a ski mountaineering race to encourage “first timers”to try the sport. Much like a 10k running race but on snow and in the spectacular scenery of the Whistler alpine.
On Saturday, April 19th, we will host the Canadian National Championships race which is already revered as the most exceptional race of its kind in North America. Watch elite athletes virtually run up heart thumping uphills and adrenaline pumping downhills for over 26 kms and almost 7000 vertical feet of climbing.
The Whistler WindUP race will be held on Sunday, April 20th a grueling skiing and snowshoe race from the Whistler Village all the way to the Roundhouse over 4000ft of climbing!
Evening Events – VIP Party /Film night
