The Subaru Squaw Valley USA Freeskiing Open kicked off today under clear blue skies in the Enchanted Forest area of Squaw Valley USA. The sold-out roster of 120 competitors faced wind packed snow conditions and a venue filled with treed lines and a variety of rock drops. Competitors took advantage of every opportunity to show off their grit as they charged toward the amphitheater of roaring spectators in the finish area.

Jaclyn Passo of Squaw Valley, CA, leads the womenÕs field with 33.13 points after day one of the competition. Her line included a complex, yet aggressive route through a series of big drops off the top before sweeping her way to the bottom with pure finesse.

ÒIt was definitely challenging to find the appropriate lineÑI really wanted to nail it,Ó glowed Passo after learning of her first-place status going into the finals. ÒThe girls just seem to be getting better and going bigger every year, so I knew I had to step up if I wanted to get through.Ó

Fellow Squaw Valley, CA, local Kevin OÕMeara brought the crowd to its knees after blazing smoothly into a massive leap off a 40-foot cliff, dramatically skimming a rock spine as he sailed by unscathed, stomping a perfect landing and skiing away with a secure grip on the menÕs lead going into day two.

ÒThat was just plain sick!Ó shouted one of his many local fans, jumping up and down with disbelief after watching as OÕMeara accomplished the unimaginable. Hugs and high-fives were the order of the day for OÕMeara, after he pulled out all the stops against a deep international field of competitors to ski away with the lead and 38.13 points out of a possible 50.

Going into the finals tomorrow, menÕs leaders include Bryce Newcomb of Sun Valley, ID, in second position with 37.25 points and Craig Garbiel of Kirkwood, CA, in third with 37.13 points. On the womenÕs side, Allie Donovan of Squaw Valley, CA, sits in second place with 32.38 points, and last weekÕs Subaru Telluride US Freeskiing Open champion Hannah Whitney of Crested Butte, CO, sits in third with 32.25 points.

TomorrowÕs final round will take athletes down the Headwall area of Squaw Valley USA for what is certain to be another dramatic day on the Subaru US Freeskiing Series.

MSI will be post comprehensive same-day video coverage of the final rounds on the newly redesigned and recently launched www.usfreeskiing.com, which features state of the art video and photo player technology. The daily uploads of video, photos, news and results of each dayÕs competition action will be available after each day concludes.
