The World Premiere of "Claim the greatest ski movie…. Ever!" Whistler hosted the sold out show of 2000 plus pumped ski fans September 14, at the Telus conference center in BC, Canada. With standing room only and sunny weather and summer sports on my mind, I left the show with a sore back from standing, but a fire burning and yearning for POW and skiing.
In all aspects of life when you do something right it feels good and you know it. We all live it, describe it, show it,…. "Claim it"!!
"Claim" is the flame from a burning Matchstick Production directed by Murray Wais, Steve Winter and Scott Gaffney. The gurus who have over the years captured the moments in all aspects of the sport and left us in awe and drooling in anticipation for the first flakes of winter.
In skiing there are different styles and ways to claim the moment when nothing feels better. Deep pow, pillows, big lines in steep exposed terrain, gaps, jumps and jibs, spins and tricks in the air, climbing and then skiing some of the worlds classic big lines. This year MSP did a great job of touching on each of these different yet inspiring moments. Claim showed that we don't have to hold in our emotions but to show the stoke of emotion and the sickness of "claiming it". In skiing it may be the super deep face shots of light dry powder that was highlighted by the section filmed in Monashees starring the talented Mark Abma, T.J. Schiller and C.R. Johnson.
The individual segments followed with Hugo Harrison, Ingrid Backstrom, James Heim, Sean Pettit, Norwegian freestyler P.K. Hunder, Kaj Zackrisson, Colby West, Rory Bushfield, Chris Rubens, Jacob Wester, Eric Hjorleifson ripping heli lines.
Simon Dumont had a high flying segment claiming a world record quarter pipe hit.
Shane McConkey made a classic appearance as the funny and retro Saucer-Boy and shows he still plays with the best. Along with a great crash and burn segment, the stoke of Antonte Montant's hair-ball skiing and paragliding, self arresting, avoiding avalanches down the peaks near Chamonix was a step above that blew everyone's mind.
Stian Hagen and Chris Davenport's earn your turns segment drew a great response from the backcountry skiers with amazing footage of climbing and skiing the Matterhorn and the Eiger peaks in the Alps. The underexposed claim of climbing and then skiing your line gets reel exposure in the grass roots Alps segment. MSP skiers Mark Abma, Rory Bushfield, Sean Pettit, Ingrid Backstrom, Hugo Harrisson, Eric Hjorleifson, James Heim and Chris Rubens were all present to watch. (They got front row seats!)
So throw your hands up in the air, double fist pump, release your stoke, but don't take yourself too seriously. Sick, was used many times to describe the lines and the athletes, but the uber sickness is brought to us by the camera angles, creative shooting and editing which takes place behind the scenes. If you are a skier ready to get amped for the upcoming winter, check out the movie and decide for yourself if it's the "best movie ever", then get ready to "Claim" your best winter…. ever!!
