On this historic year of the 50th anniversary of Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay's first assent (May 29, 1953) , Chomolungma has fallen to at least 4 new records. The most impressive may be the 10 hour 56 minute ascent of the mountain by 36 year old sherpa, Lhakpa Gelu. Also the most climbs by 1 person, and the youngest (15) and oldest (70) climbers to summit the world's tallest peak.
On a sad note, 2 people died and 6 were injured in a helicopter accident near base camp.
