Summer is a time to bask in the sun, sit at the beach, perhaps a patio, enjoy a cold beverage, and take in the seldom seen skin of the Canadian women. In Whistler, not only can you do all that in one day, you can also have the added touch of summer skiing or snowboarding.
With the glory of a raccooned tanned face, happy, smiley skiers in Whistler forget the summer blues and reward themselves each night with an onslaught of drinks in hopes of picking up a prized trophy. Man or women, skier or snowboarder, when single or jonesing for snow, one must hunt the prey.
And let us begin our story...Just like the glacier was lucky this summer, in terms of amounts of snow and how long it lasted, many people around me found that lucky horseshoe, four leaf clover, or rabbit’s foot as well. Whether it was at the all-nighter at the Maxx Fish, or while sharing a T-bar on the glacier, or perhaps friends introduced you at a café, love was in the air; Maybe it's the water, or perhaps the excitement of hosting the Olympics in 2010, regardless, if you were in Whistler skiing this summer, you were lucky.
As the last few weeks of camp rolled on, weather began a clearing trend and there were more sunny days than earlier in the summer season. Campers and coaches alike were amped every day the sun shone and sessions of all sorts took place. In the third week of camp the quaterpipe was manicured in various degrees allowing for many creative hits. Check out the pics to see what went on. Other highlights included perhaps the biggest snow skate sessions I've ever seen. The session had everything from a 10 foot wall ride, moto cross gap jump and various positioned rails over the course of the summer.
Big mountain snowboard slayer, Jonovan Moore, is champ of the snowskate and his skills will keep you on your toes as snowskating turns mainstream and becomes a major alternative sport. The possibilities of bringing this sport to the masses because of the small set ups, low cost and interest of skateboarding will blow this sport out of proportion in years to come. Finally a use for snowblades!
On another note the final week of camp saw a larger table that was manicured in the COC lane providing everyone an opportunity to strut their bag o tricks in front of various photographers and videographers. On hand capturing the action included Theory 3 media, Poorboyz's filming for Oakley's movie 24/7, PFP and Volume video magazine.
If all that riding doesn't tire you out, after camps activities will. In Whistler, anything is possible, you just have to have some energy to go out and do it. From paintball to wakeboarding, white water rafting, golfing, water ramps, hiking, hot springs, swimming at the beach, and checking out the ladies from the patio, Whistler will keep you entertained.
In conclusion, I played way too much paintball, ate too much sushi, drank too much and had way too much fun. Can't wait till next summer.
