The Video Gangs world tour is about so much more than just the movie. Sure the movie was sick, (even if there wasn't a turn to be counted) there were monster airs, bold multi-kinked rails, large launches in the pipe, and it was all performed in the best possible style. But I knew the flick would be like that before it even played. We've come to expect so much. To me, the movie was more about fashion and being cool than riding snow, but who says that's wrong, it's always good to know about what's in the door for 2004.
Snowboarders are awesome. As a skier at a snowboard jam I was completely reminded of how much snowboarders have as a culture. I guess a lot of it is borrowed. Skating, surfing, punk, and hip hop all combine and mix in snowboarding and comes out with it's own flair. In the very least it's unique, and any authenticity is a welcome relief these days.
Snowboarding is a culture that keeps being cool alive; not that our drive to stand out will ever die. It's obvious however, that snowboarding is still holding a piece of cool, dictating what's up, telling kids about how life is and turning a profit on it. I think they're working harder for it these days though; more than they used to have to.
There's still a lot bling around for urban and big hit jibbers; But it doesn't come off as hard as it used to be, thank goodness. We've all bought a little too heavily into what 'cash money' hip hop has presented us with recently but the mountains have a way of filtering out what the city can not.
One thing that will probably never change is that with cool comes the crowd and the crew from Video Gangs is still able to draw one. Hundreds flocked to the signing tables to get a piece of love from the many on-hand pro's and the riders performed their celebrity role with rock star eloquence.
I guess as long as people will follow there will always be someone to lead.
