Biglines - Kristen Ulmer In 1985, Kristen Ulmer entered the realm of extreme skiing and became the perennial oxymoron in the industry; a chick who doesn't care about pain, a sponsored skibum who doesn't drink or do drugs, a woman who burns the pants off any skier- male or female, a strong turner with a body even Playboy wants to photograph. She wears hightops with dresses and hasn't changed her hairstyle since high school. She's single and wild.

"I don't really know why people call me crazy," said Ulmer from her
neo-classic tan couch in her home at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon.
"I guess 'cause I huck big air but, I don't that anymore. I'm way into Kite
boarding. Yeah, why do they see me that way?"

One of her closest friends,
fellow mountaineer Tom Jungst explained, "Kristen's an unusual female," he
said. "Everyone respects her confidence....and her storytelling. She creates
her legends."

The stories are captivating and outrageous; and true. There's the one about
her drinking Red Bull from a stripper's breast at a club in Whistler.
Confirmed. Getting caught in two avalanches in two consecutive days.
Confirmed. Paragliding off a peak in Chamonix in winds no one else would
launch. Confirmed. Riding her bike from Los Angeles, CA, to Mt. Hood, Ore.,
to ski moguls. Confirmed. Wearing vibrating panties out to dinner.
Confirmed. Ulmer loves to shock whether through funky dress or fearless
skiing. Now she's shocking everyone with a new twist. Her Ski to Live
clinics are a 4 day workshop geared toward skiers (and snowboarders) looking
to find themselves through skiing.

I
became a World Class skier in one run," she remembered. "I wanted to
impress this guy I met in Asia, so I just skied 20 miles
an hour faster, taking
the same turns. Once I realized I could pull that off I
did it every run afterwards" She moved to Snowbird, Utah, and in one
season went from
skiing in jeans to her first ski movie. "If I couldn't ski
on a powder day because I had to work, I
cried; real tears. Of course my boss eventually asked me
to quit!" She confessed.

She's finally sharing that passion in a
"clinical" way.
This motivational skiing seminar to be held at Snowbird, January 22-26, and
Alta, April 1-5, involves Yoga in the morning, skiing with her and
comparable coaches all day, group dinner and evenings with Larry O'Neil: a
Life Coach and Adventure Athlete, Larry has worked in the personal
development fields since 1987. He'll encourage athletes to explore
thought-provoking personal growth projects.

"I want to help people with
their passion and purpose in life, while reveling in the wonders of skiing
and the camaraderie of great people," said Ulmer prophetically.

She's come a long way from flashing in 25 ski films, skiing the Grand Teton,
mountain-biking across India alone, sneaking into Tibet to attempt a ski
descent from the sixth highest mountain in the world (Cho-Oyu- she had to
bail or risk arrest by Chinese authorities), jumping 70-foot cliffs,
breaking her heel in the X-Games, suffering through six knee operations,
throwing heli's, flips and grabs.

But don't think Ulmer hasn't lost her verve. At 36, Ulmer continues to defy
the odds and Gods. "Skiing makes me feel powerful, strong, confident and
special," said Ulmer.

She shows no fear. "We had hiked the Grand and
[Kristen] jumped right in, wanting to ski cut it first. No discussion," said
Jungst about their Grand expedition. " The slide broke loose and in one
incredible move that took less than a second she stepped out of it from her
uphill ski. The slide was the loudest thing I had ever heard. Someone had to
do it but I wouldn't have wished her position on anyone; even myself. Petor
probably thought she was nuts but even he may not have been skilled enough
to make that move."

She filmed on Mt. Superior for Matchstick Productions in 1999 with Tom Evans
and Dean Cummings. "Kristen lined up a 30-foot cliff jump. The takeoff had
trees on the edge but she went for it anyway," Cummings explained. Her pole
basket snagged a tree and practically ripped her arm off. She flew 35 to 40
feet sideways and crashed. She went right back up and hucked even bigger."
Ulmer has health insurance, a written will, a 401k, and rental properties
throughout Salt Lake City. She never planned to huck forever, therefore, Ski
to Live is the obvious extension of a lifelong passion. "I've put too much
into this industry to walk away without sharing," said Ulmer.

Ski to Live: at Alta $1495.00, at Snowbird $1695 (NOTE: Snowboarders are
welcome at the Bird). Included is airport transfers, four nights
accommodation (double occupancy), all breakfasts and dinners, yoga every
morning, four days of skiing, three days of coaching, and four days of self
discovery.
