I know this is a ski site, but given the circumstances, and my own personal convictions, I thought this would be a good time to solicate the help of the mountain community to stop the attacks on Afghanistan. (these are personal thoughts, the opinions expressed are not those of biglines.com)
War sucks, especially this war, since we don't know who the enemy is. I know the WTC attacks were terrible, unjustifiable and horrific, but what about the 100,000 Iraqi people the US killed in the Gulf war, not to mention an estimated 1,000,000 more death's as a result of economic sanctions imposed on their country. I think we need to examine the cause of this deep hatred towards the US government, and take steps to improve US foriegn policy, rather than go in and kill countless more innnocent victims.
If someone dies in the mountains, we don't get mad at the mountains, we look at the circumstances that led to the tragedy, learn from them, and change our behavior so it doesn't happen again.
The only thing this attack will accomplish is give the American public a taste of revenge, and create more martyrs in the name of Islam. These attacks have turned Osama into a hero in the Muslim world, and in turn has created for him a huge following of fundamental Islamic Militants more than willing to join his cause. Ultimately, the US is assisting Bin Laden in his effort to unite the Islamic world against the USA. Every bomb creates another martyr willing to die in a fight against the states.
Please write your member of Parliment or Congress and express your concerns, the least we can do is stop Chretien's government from joining this tragedy.
