Snowed in at Silverton, Co
Submited By Holly Walker On 2008-01-07

What a better way to start the 2008 year than skiing blower pow at some 12,000+ feet? Being snowed in... Is too much snow a bad thing?

The two passes leaving Silverton, Co. have been closed since Saturday afternoon. On Saturday while skiing deep face shot pow on an empty mountain... I didn't really care. I did care on Sunday morning when I discovered that 3 more feet of fresh pow lay in the mountains, left to be untouched. An avalanche blocked the road to the ski area. In fact every possible natural slide but one had gone...I was too scared to venture into the backcountry and too out of the loop to know locals were making a day out of trading skis for snowboards and vice versa and skiing the little hill at Kendall Mountain. The final slide yet to go is the one is what keeps the road to Durango closed. Luckily for me Delta Airlines thought the weather was too hairy and cancelled my flight... so not making it to the airport was inconsequential and no lost cost. Now I just don't know if I will make it to the airport for my rescheduled flight tomorrow. Just before I started writing this I thought I saw a break of blue in the sky and hope of making it home. But now big flakes are pounding from the sky again. When I walked the streets of Silverton drunk last night, wadding through deep snow...delirious from 12 hours straight of drinking... one of the few activities to do in such a small majestic mountain town... I couldn't help debate in my mind the words of many locals... "stay until the spring thaw Holly"... "where else do you have to be thats so important?" "Atleast stay until the storm ends and ski the pow." Already a week late for classes in Vancouver... my life's internal conflict nags me... ski pow and fuck it all or be responsible. The real question is if I am really throwing anything away... or just forced with simple choices compared to the majority people's problems. I just heard 2 more blasts... maybe the roads will open before I decide to never leave...maybe too much snow is a bad thing.
