Ski enthusiasts and environmentalists throughout the Bow Valley will be flocking to the Banff Park Lodge Friday (Oct. 6) for what could be a watershed announcement by Parks Canada’s officials about the fate of the national park’s ski hills.
Parks Canada’s top officials are gathering at the Lodge Friday to announce changes to the ski area management guidelines, possibly allowing or prohibiting the expansion of current ski hill operations in the park and the use of the hills during the summer.
Parks officials have been reviewing the ski hill guidelines for several months, taking into account extensive lobbying by ski hill and tourism groups, as well as conservationists intent on maintaining the natural integrity of the park.
“We can only be optimistic that reason has finally prevailed and that the minister (Federal Environment Minister Rona Ambrose) will turn around the decline of the Banff ski areas,” said Crosbie Cotton, Director of the National Parks Ski Area Association.[/i]
Anybody go to this meeting or know anything about what was said? I couldn't find mention of it in todays news.
