I was going to go there to.
I was going to go there to. Mainly because I'm thinking about going to the Calgary Snow Show. I think Fernie probably has the best conditions right now. Stay where you are if you can! P

snow line
well the snow line just jumped up to about the elevation of the top of the pass at highwood. (the top of where we ski at harvey) which is why im thinking of heading to higher grounds. There was some pics posted a while ago from Tent Ridge? that looked good said it was in kananskis, not sure where in relation to highwood though. anyone else?

Tent Ridge
Tent ridge is back towards Canmore on the Smith Dorien Gravel Road on the west side at the Mt Shark trail head. It is traditionally wind loaded and there was a double fatality there 3 years ago in the early season as the entire slope slid to the ground. I went up to French Glacier last week and the snow was blown off with strong south winds loading north aspects.
I think you'd be better off going to Rae glacier and take advantage of the Highwood Pass road being open.

It was raining there today. The path up Ptarmigan cirque was muddy. Patiences is a virtue.

snow levels dropping
snow level is suppossed to drop today and overnight and through tomorrow and the rest of the week will remain cool. If this system hits HARD it might be possible to ski. But may require another few more snowfalls that don't melt between each other.

Rae not good but good :)
Hey time 2 climb. By the way I loved your early season vid. I think I saw your tracks on Rae last week (the only snow remaining on the lower half of the glacial moraines was crusty tracks that evaded wind scouring). The top half from the rockbands was worth the hike 10-15 cm penetrations through spindrifty powder. I was happy for jump turns on the first run of the season. But I wouldn't go back until they get at least 30cm in the pass.

Thanks for the update and the comment on the vid. Probably wasn't our tracks, we haven't been to Rae since Sept. 22, or at least the very start of Oct.
Wrender: "how to get their from banff? take yuppie street?" Hey Wrender, a yuppie is a young URBAN professional. That and I don't have enough money to qualify, although it would be nice.

We went on the 11 and there
We went on the 11 and there was enough to ski but there were rocks every where on the Rae glacier. Depeneding on how much snow the pass got and the winds it might be worth checking out.

Highwood
I was there with Guillaume and agree, there wasn't much snow there. You would probably be best to drive somewhere like Fernie that got a lot more snow. Hopefully it snow's more this week though and then highwood pass would be good.

Hey LID, that spammer got his post and his account deleted. Biglines suffers from these guys, it really sucks. They are not robots but real people who must get paid (in chickens or something) to spam sites all day... pretty hard to filter them out. -tg I'm curious if highwood got hammered with snow in this recent moisture. The Purcells are almost void of snow right now as this one's come in hot.

2012 Highwood
Heyoh! Last time I was up there there (2 weeks ago), there was a dusting of snow on the road side. I have heard rumors of trip reports from skiing in Ptarmigan, and I have seen pictures of skiing on Rae Glacier. The reason I say rumors of a trip report is that the details were so limited that I don't even know if they skinned from roadside, but I do know they skied something in there. As for Rae, the skiing looked really good, but also included were shots of hiking the trail in. Cheers

Highwood pass Nov 11 2012
Had some great turns at Highwood Pass on Sunday. Just me and the dog. Wind was blowing pretty good and formed some good slabs in some areas. Ski cut an open area just behind some trees on the lee ward side of the ridge and as you can see got a pretty fair sized result. My dog stands 65 cms at the shoulder . The skiing on lee slopes was excellent ; 10 - 15 on a firm crust. Still can't believe this highway gets closed in winter. |
